League Title at Stake for Sheiks

The Hollywood High boys basketball team can clinch first place with a win.

The Central League boys basketball title is still up for grabs and the champion will be determined tonight. leads crosstown rival by one game in the standings with one game left for each team.

If Hollywood beats Belmont, the Sheiks clinch first place. If Hollywood loses and Bernstein wins at Contreras, the Dragons will catch the Sheiks in the standings and win the crown by virtue of a tiebreaker.

The first tiebreaker is head-to-head. The teams split their two league meetings. The second tiebreaker is better overall record, where Bernstein (15-8, 9-2) hold an advantage over Hollywood (10-5, 10-1).

So it's all on the line for both Hollywood schools. Only the Sheiks, however, are in control of their own destiny. If they take care of business at home Friday, the title is theirs regardless of what Bernstein does. Hollywood beat Belmont 48-40 on the road in the teams' previous meeting.

Bernstein, however, is on a roll, having won five straight games--including a 62-55 victory over Hollywood on Jan. 26. Tonight, the Dragons will look to avenge their 43-40 home loss to Contreras in the first round of league play.

The Dragons figure to have the tougher of the two games, having to travel to the third-place team in the standings while the Sheiks get to host the fifth-place team. However, should Hollywood should slip up and Bernstein get it done on the road the Dragons will be deserving of their first-ever league championship.

Both varsity games tip-off at 5:30 p.m. at their respective locations.
