26-year-old Geneti Wins L.A. Marathon; Weather Sends Runners to Hospitals

On a rainy Sunday, Markos Geneti breaks the L.A. Marathon record, running the 26.2 mile course in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 35 seconds.

Despite cold weather and rain, 26-year-old Markos Geneti of Ethiopia won the LA Marathon at a record-shattering time of two hours, six minutes, and 35 seconds. The previous record was held by two-time winner Wesley Korir, who came in fourth place in Sunday’s race. It was Geneti’s first marathon.

Geneti and women’s first-place winner Buzunesh Deba, 23, each won $25,000 and a Honda Insight EX sedan. Deba was the first Ethiopian woman to win an LA Marathon. Women runners were given a 17-minute, three-second head start ahead of the men.

Due to the frigid conditions, hundreds of runners were evaluated for hypothermia. to drop them off at their cars or local hospitals. The Santa Monica Red Cross gave out blankets at the finish line. When the race started at 7:26 a.m., it was only 54 degrees.

This year’s 26.2 mile course began at Dodger Stadium and ended in Santa Monica, stopping in Silver Lake and Hollywood along the way. Patch reported street closures still in effect on Cahuenga Boulevard and parallel streets between Sunset Boulevard and Franklin Avenue at 11a.m. Participants, some of them walking the course, were still in Hollywood. Traffic was backed up on Franklin Avenue in both directions during the street closures. Congratulations to the winners and all the participants who braved the rain.

There were 23,542 registered participants in the 26th LA Marathon. We counted 32 Hollywood residents who made it to the finish line. Here are their results:
