When they say the best things in life are free, they probably didn't stop to consider comic books.
On Saturday in Hollywood will celebrate Free Comic Book Day, a nationwide event, with an event-packed schedule, including appearances and signing by comic book artists, workshops and, of course, free comic books.
It’s no wonder that Free Comic Book Day is the busiest day of the year for the store, both in foot traffic and in sales, according to Chris Rosa, who’s been the manager of the store for more than two years.
“It’s a wonderful entry point for new guests,” said Rosa. “We get to open our doors and give people a stress-free way of getting acquainted with this wonderful medium.”
Meltdown Comics will be giving out free copies of Mouse Guard/ The Dark Crystal Flip Book autographed by David Peterson, writer and artist of the Mouse Guard story and Brian Holguin, the writer of The Dark Crystal.
The massive 9,000-square-foot venue on Sunset Boulevard allows for Meltdown Comics to provide plenty to see and do on Free Comic Book Day. Original puppets from The Dark Crystal film have been lent to the store by the Jim Henson Company so fans can come check out the Skeksis up close, and the film will be screening as well. Prizes and giveaway will go on throughout the day, and The Grilled Cheese Truck will offer food to visitors.
Jeff Cahn of Red Spike and Owen Wiseman of Samurai’s Blood will be signing at 2 p.m., and the creators of the hit all-ages series Reed Gunther (now published by Image Comics) will host an all-new creating comics class just for kids.
Meltdown Comics opened in 1993. They not only carry a large and comprehensive collection of comic books, but also feature lectures and workshops by industry professionals, and often hold free performances and other events in the large space.
“It’s liveable, it’s breathable. You can move around,” said Rosa of the large gallery space. “We can have these events that are more than just a guy sitting at a table autographing some books. We can make it a real event.”
Free Comic Book Day will take place from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 7.
