Paradigm Project Ends 146-Mile Trek With Wood Bundles in Hollywood

The group is celebrating the end of a 10-day Southern California journey to raise awareness of the physical challenges Kenyans must endure to make a meal.

Greg Spencer Jr. and seven others were celebrating Thursday the end of a 10-day trek encompassing a 146-mile stretch from San Diego to Hollywood.

And it wasn't easy: Imagine the physical challenge of carrying 50-pound wood bundles on your back through varying weather of rain and triple digit temperatures.

The effort aims to raise awareness for the 3 billion people in the developing world who have to haul wood for miles in order to cook scant meals over an open fire, said Spencer.

The Paradigm Project walkers completed their journey at noon at Space 15 Twenty, where they set up an authentic Kenyan hut and traditional stove to show attendees the severity of Kenyan domestic life. According to the Paradigm Project, inhaling the smoke from a day of cooking is the equivalent of smoking 40 cigarettes a day.

Patch editor Winter Johnson caught up with Spencer via cellphone as he was trekking his way to Marina del Rey on Wednesday. See her Q&A on .
