Nearly 1,000 Turn Out for Free Christmas Dinner [VIDEO]

Annual event sponsored by Temple Israel of Hollywood and held in the Hollywood United Methodist Church gymnasium feeds the poor and homeless.

Nearly 1,000 people were fed Sunday at 's 26th Annual Christmas Dinner for the Hungry and Homeless.

As in previous years, the event was held in the gymnasium of the Hollywood United Methodist Church at Highland and Franklin avenues.

Volunteers came not only from Temple Israel but from throughout Los Angeles and included the Disney VoluntEARS. They served up a traditional turkey meal, with pie and ice cream for dessert, while a band played Christmas songs and popular tunes.

When the diners finished their meals, they could pick up bags of toiletries and other supplies and get their pictures taken with Santa Claus. Children could also pick what they wanted from a large selection of toys.

Volunteers counted 993 people who were served. Ken Ostrove, a member of Temple Israel and the lead coordinator of the event, said that number appeared to be about the same as the estimated turnouts in the last couple of years.
