Gay and Lesbian Elder Housing Honors Garcetti

Councilman is recognized for his role in development of Triangle Square, an affordable gay and lesbian housing community in Hollywood.

City Council President Eric Garcetti has been recognized Gay and Lesbian Elder Housing for his work in helping to develop the senior housing community  at Selma Avenue and Ivar Avenue in Hollywood.

GLEH honored Garcetti with its Vanguard Award at its 10th Annual Garden Party Benefit on Oct. 2.

Triangle Square provides housing and resources for the senior LGBT community, and is the first of its kind in the nation.

"Councilman Garcetti has long been a very strong supporter of the LGBT community and LGBT issues," said Julie Wong, a Garcetti spokeswoman. "He officiated the city of Los Angeles' first gay marriage after the California courts opined that it was legal, and has been a really strong supporter of equality and equal rights."

The $21.5 million Triangle Square community opened in 2007. It features modern architecture and décor, a pool, balconies and views of Hollywood, an interior courtyard, and it is designed to enhance the lives of its residents with social and recreational outlets.

Almost one-third of Triangle Square's 104 units are set aside for LGBT seniors who were homeless or at risk of being homeless, and for seniors living with HIV/AIDS.
