Weekend DUI Checkpoint Planned in Hollywood

Law enforcement officers around Los Angeles County will be out in force over the Memorial Day Weekend on the lookout for people driving while impaired and committing other traffic violations.

Beginning Friday night, the Avoid the 100 Los Angeles County DUI Campaign will include the deployment of "saturation patrols" of officers, along with driver's license/sobriety checkpoints.

"Friends and families will gather for celebrations to start the summer season, which often includes alcohol," Wendy Brewer, of the Avoid the 100 Campaign, said in a statement.

"Law enforcement is reminding everyone to make plans now for those weekend trips and partying," Brewer said. "Plan to use a 'designated sober driver' to prevent arrest, or -- worse -- a deadly driving tragedy."

Driver's license/sobriety checkpoints at various locations as follows:
   -- Friday at 7 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department begins an eight-hour checkpoint at Figueroa and Ninth Street near downtown Los Angeles.
   -- Friday at 7 p.m., the LAPD begins an eight-hour checkpoint at Ventura Boulevard and Columbus Avenue in Van Nuys.
   -- Friday at 7:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol begins a six-hour checkpoint at Whittier Boulevard near Hoefner Avenue in East Los Angeles.
   -- Saturday at 7 p.m., the LAPD will begin an eight-hour checkpoint at Sherman Way at Independence Avenue in Winnetka.
   -- Saturday at 7 p.m., the LAPD will begin an eight-hour checkpoint at San Pedro and Main streets in South Los Angeles.
   -- Saturday at 7 p.m., the LAPD will begin an eight-hour checkpoint at Highland and De Longpre avenues in Hollywood.

LAPD saturation patrols are planned on Sunday in the Foothill and southwest Los Angeles areas.

Motorists were urged to call 911 if they see anyone driving dangerously.
