Avalon Nightclub Evacuated Due to 'Theatrical Fog Vapor' Exposure; 6 Hospitalized

Two people are taken to hospitals in unspecified condition.

Six people were hospitalized Saturday with respiratory irritations and burn injuries after exposure to "theatrical fog vapor" at a concert in Hollywood, a city fire official said.

The incident was reported at 6:04 p.m. during a concert at Avalon Hollywood, 1735 N. Vine St., said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Rescuers believe a theatrical special effect fogging system caused the injuries, from which most felt better after fresh air and examination, Humphrey said.

"Along with respiratory irritation, a few patrons who contacted dripping liquid from apparent heavy use of smoke effect have superficial burn (injuries)," Humphrey said.

Six people were taken to hospitals in unspecified condition, but 22 people in all -- between the ages of eight and 20 years old -- were assessed at the scene, Humphrey said.

"There was zero visibility," Humphrey said. "People could not even see their hands."

Humphrey said what was believed to be carbon dioxide caused respiratory irritations and topical burns as it dripped inside the venue.

"One of the bands there was Midnight Red," Humphrey said. "This band used social media to say there was a riot, but there was not."

Humphrey said none of the band members performing at the venue were injured in any way. The event was closed and officials from the health department would determine when it would reopen.

Vine Street was closed between Franklin Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard while the group was assessed, he said.
