Stubborn Commercial Fire in Hollywood Took 134 Firefighters to Extinguish

A fire that broke out this morning at a one-story chrome-plating facility in Hollywood flared up tonight but crews knocked down the flames in less than 10 minutes.

More than 130 firefighters took a little more than two hours to douse the stubborn greater alarm fire, which was originally reported at 8:58 a.m. at 1001 N. Orange Drive, said Katherine Main of the Los Angeles City Fire Department.

A crew that was left to monitor the building spotted the flare-up at 7:40 p.m. and it was knocked down in eight minutes, she said.

A firefighter became ill during this morning's battle and was transported to an area hospital in good condition, Main said.

At one point, firefighters battling the blaze transitioned to a defensive operation and had to deal with a partial roof collapse of the one- story structure, she said.

A hazardous materials team monitored water and storm drains, but no problems were found, Main said.

Fire department personnel will remain at the scene overnight, she said.
