Speeding Driver Crashes in Cahuenga Pass

A man overturns his car and shears off a fire hydrant early Saturday morning in Hollywood, police say.

A speeding driver slammed his vehicle into a fire hydrant in the Cahuenga Pass, overturned his car and and then ran into the bushes to hide from responding police, authorities said.

The man was headed southbound on Cahuenga Boulevard, near West Hillpark Drive, about 3:20 a.m. when he overturned and sheared off a fire hydrant, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Karen Ellis of the West Traffic Division said.

Witnesses said the driver exited his car and then hid in some bushes, Ellis said.

California Highway Patrol officers found him and arrested him, she added. The suspect, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to a hospital for his injuries, Ellis said.

It was unclear whether alcohol was a factor in the accident.

The crash remains under investigation, she said.
