Sobriety Checkpoint Planned in Hollywood Friday

Officers will set up a checkpoint on Santa Monica Boulevard between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m.

The Los Angeles Police Department is planning a DUI and driver's license checkpoint Friday on Santa Monica Boulevard between Bronson Avenue and Van Ness Avenue.

The checkpoint, which will operate between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. Saturday, is aimed at reducing the number of people injured or killed on local roads by impaired drivers, said Lt. Ron Katona of the LAPD Traffic Coordination Section.

"Over the course of the past year, DUI-related collisions have claimed 12 lives and injured 825 of our friends and neighbors in Los Angeles," Katona said.

Drivers who are found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol can expect jail time, insurance increases, fines and license suspension, according to Katona.

The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
