Police Chasing Kidnapping Suspect in Downtown L.A.

Shooter Injures Man on Franklin Avenue

Authorities say a man was brought to the hospital in critical but stable condition Thursday morning.

Police are investigating a shooting that wounded a man in his late 50s on a Hollywood street corner and sent rounds through the window of at least one apartment.

The shooting at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Gower Street was reported around 11:50 p.m. Wednesday, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Leonard Calderon.

The victim, who was shot once in the abdomen, was taken to a hospital, where he was in critical but stable condition this morning, Calderon said. An unloaded .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun was recovered in some bushes at the scene, he said.

The lone suspect, a man in his 20s, was last seen running northbound on Beachwood Drive toward the Hollywood Hills, Calderon said.

"At this point we don't know what started the altercation. It could have been a running gun battle between the two," he said.

Stray rounds went through the window of one and possibly a second apartment, but officers found no evidence that anyone was injured by the bullets, Calderon said.

A 45 caliber bullet in the abdomen can do a lot of damage. I hope the guy is okay. This just down the street from where I live. When I see all the crime that goes on in Hollywood, it makes me sick. Also, most of the Hollywood cops seem more interested in getting their lattés and scones from Starbucks than arresting crooks. I've had several experiences when the cops just told people to "move on" instead of doing their job and arresting people who are committing assault, and even worse crimes. There! I said it.
