Zac Efron and another man were involved in a fight with a pair of transients near downtown Los Angeles, according to media reports out today, and the 26-year-old actor was apparently on the receiving end of a punch in the mouth.

Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Station were near the Pasadena (110) Freeway and Temple Street about 2:25 a.m. Sunday when they found "two men there, and a couple of transient individuals there, who had gotten into a physical altercation," LAPD spokesman Richard French said.

According to TMZ.com, officers saw Efron and a man the actor identified as his bodyguard "in a full-blown melee with at least three other people."

Efron told police he and his friend had run out of gas and were sitting inside the car when they got into a confrontation with some transients after throwing a bottle from the vehicle, according to TMZ. The actor's bodyguard got out of the car and got into a fight with the transients, and when Efron went to assist, he received a punch in the mouth, the website reported.

Efron rose to fame in Disney's "High School Musical" films. He has also appeared in films including "Hairspray," "17 Again," "Charlie St. Cloud," "The Paperboy" and "New Year's Eve."
