Outpost Estates Will Form Neighborhood Watch Program

Neighbors gather to learn about crime prevention from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Outpost Estates has officially decided to form a Neighborhood Watch Program. A group of residents gathered in the Community Room at Highland Camrose Park Wednesday night to hash out their plans.

“We discussed a lot of different ways to start up,” said LAPD officer Nicole Montgomery of the Hollywood Division.

Montgomery was on hand to answer questions from residents as well as brief them about local crimes and offer tips on how to prevent crime.

“Lately, the big issue has been lock your car, and hide all your valuables,” Montgomery said. “The majority of crimes have been near the entrances of Runyon Canyon Park.”

She said many visitors to the park often forget to lock their cars and leave valuable items, including purses, in plain view.

“It’s not a huge amount of crime,” she said. “It comes in waves.”

Some days Montgomery is even known to leave flyers on visitors’ cars warning them of the danger and takes the time to talk to them as they enter the park as part of the LAPD’s “Hide it, Lock it, Keep it” program. She said a neighborhood watch program could only help prevent these and other crimes, including house break-ins.

“It’s all about getting to know your neighbors,” she said. “It’s just about being aware of what’s going on. We’re not asking people to personally get involved. If you see something, call the police. I really would love people to just pay attention to their surroundings.”
