The incident occurs near the 6500 block of Hollywood Boulevard, near Wilcox Avenue, around 1:50 a.m.

A man was stabbed in the chest and seriously wounded early Wednesday morning in Hollywood, police said.

Officers were sent to the 6500 block of Hollywood Boulevard, near Wilcox Avenue, around 1:50 a.m., said Lt. David Ferry of the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood Station.

The victim was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and was in critical condition, Ferry said, adding that the man is in his late 20s or early 30s.

Some sort of dispute preceded the stabbing, Ferry said.

"Somebody bumped somebody, that was the catalyst for the whole thing," Ferry told CBS2.

The confrontation culminated with the suspect plunging a large hunting- type knife into the victim, Ferry said.

A search was under way for the suspect, described as a white man of around 38 who is 5 feet 8 and weighs around 175 pounds. He was wearing a black hat, black leather jacket, black boots and dark pants, Ferry said.

The suspect was last seen with another man on foot headed southbound on Cahuenga Boulevard in the area of Selma Avenue, Ferry said.

Witnesses told a news photographer at the scene that the victim was stabbed as many as five times.

Hollywood Boulevard was closed to traffic early this morning between Hudson and Wilcox avenues as police investigated the stabbing.
