Funeral Services Announced for LAFD Veteran Firefighter

Glenn Allen died Friday, Feb, 18, one day after the ceiling of a Hollywood Hills home collapsed on him and one day before his first grandchild was born. His funeral is set for Friday.

Update: A candlelight vigil will be held for firefighter Glenn Allen Thursday evening in Studio City. The 90-minute vigil will take place at Fire Station 78, which is located at 4041 Whitsett Avenue. The vigil begins at 6:30 p.m. Allen's memorial service and funeral will be held Friday morning. The house where Allen was fatally injured has been declared a crime scene, and investigators are back at the scene today to determine whether fire codes had been violated.

Funeral services for the veteran Los Angeles city firefighter who died last week fighting a Hollywood Hills house fire are scheduled for Friday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Glenn Allen, 61, died Friday of injuries he suffered while battling a house fire in the 1500 block of North Viewsite Drive. One day after he died, his daughter gave birth to a son, his family told CBS2.

Allen was injured when the ceiling of a Hollywood mansion collapsed on them shortly after midnight Thursday, according to the city fire department.

The fire, which may have been caused by a problem with a natural gas-fireplace, was reported about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Allen, a 38-year veteran of the Los Angeles Fire Department, died at 12:15 p.m. Friday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He was about one year from retirement. Five other firefighters were also injured in the blaze. The others who were injured — two of them county firefighters — are recovering. The two residents of the home were uninjured.

Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti released a statement Friday afternoon, offering his condolences to his family.

"I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Glenn Allen, who lost his life while protecting the people of Los Angeles—the people he served every day of his 38 years in our fire department. Los Angeles lost a hero today," Garcetti said.

Besides Allen, another firefighter was hospitalized but was reported in good condition, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Two other Los Angeles city firefighters were treated and released. Additionally, two Los Angeles County firefighters were treated and released.

The house fire was initially reported at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday night in the 1500 block of North Viewsite Drive. It was considered knocked down around 1 a.m.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa issued a statement Thursday morning. "I was deeply saddened to learn that four Los Angeles Angeles city firefighters and two Los Angeles County firefighters were injured in the line of duty as they responded to a call near the Hollywood Hills late last night," he said.
