The Coroner's Office today identified a Hollywood man who was stabbed to death by his roommate.

The victim was identified as Matthew Jeffcoat, 34, said Coroner's Lt. Cheryl MacWillie.

At 8:50 p.m. Wednesday, Jeffcoat was stabbed multiple times in the chest by another man in front of the apartment building where both he and the suspect live, police said.

Jeffcoat was found in the street in the 1600 block of North Courtney Avenue, near the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard, said Lt. Dan Randolph of the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood Station.

Jeffcoat was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, but died soon after, Randolph said.

The suspect -- also in his 30s -- was apprehended a short distance from the crime scene. The arrest was made after the suspect was identified to police by a hearing-impaired man, Randolph said.

The witness' assistance"was instrumental in the identification of the suspect," Randolph said.

Police have yet to release the name of the suspect, said Los Angeles police officer Rosario Herrera of the Media Relations Section.

He said police at the scene believed the suspect may have been injured because he had blood on him, and he was also taken to a hospital for examination.
