The fire was reported at 7:26 p.m. at 6121 Sunset Blvd., in the former Columbia Square building, which was under re-construction, said Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Firefighters arriving at the location near Gower Street reported flames showing from the five-story commercial structure, Scott said.
With 30 firefighters on the scene, the blaze was under control in 19 minutes, Scott said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation, but it may have started in a garbage chute in front of the building, Scott said.
Video from the scene showed flamed bursting upward along the exterior chute.
Columbia Square was the West Coast headquarters for CBS Radio beginning in 1938 and the site of KNX-AM (1070) until 2007.
