Police Check Hollywood Theaters, Plan Perimeter Checks

Police take some extra precautions in Hollywood following Friday's deadly Colorado shooting during a screening of 'The Dark Knight Rises.'

Los Angeles police said they met with management at the ArcLight Theater on Friday and plan to patrol local theaters following a deadly shooting during a midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises in Colorado that left 12 dead and injuring at least 50 others.

“We had a unit go to the ArcLight and meet with management and advise them on what to look for,” said Sgt. Chuck Slater of the LAPD Hollywood Division. “Obviously, we can’t station officers at every theater.”

Nothing unusual occurred at Hollywood theaters last night, he said. The plan for today is business as usual and “throughout the day officers will cruise by theaters,” Slater said.

The majority of theaters are on Hollywood Boulevard where officers generally patrol anyway, according to Slater.

“We’ll check the perimeter this weekend and make sure everything is okay,” he said.

While the Hollywood Division does not have the man power to station officers at every theater, he said “within minutes,” local officers can have the aid of officers from other LAPD units around the city if need be.

ArcLight and Universal CityWalk are the two theaters in the Hollywood area screening the movie.

Uniformed and undercover officers will provide high-visibility patrol to major theaters as well as sporting events, concerts and crowded venues, according to an LAPD press statement issued Friday afternoon.

"Since Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the world, it is important that we all remain vigilant and do everything we can to prevent incidents like this from occurring in our Communities, said LAPD Chief Charlie Beck. "Remember, if you see something, say something.”
