Repairs from 2005 Slides Near Hollywood Reservoir Completed

About $2.7 million is spent to protect a neighborhood near the Hollywood Reservoir from future landslides.

Work to prevent future landslides in a neighborhood near the Hollywood Reservoir has been completed, the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service announced Tuesday.

About $2.7 million was spent shoring up a hill along Lakeridge Drive, where seven homes were threatened by storm-driven slides in January and February 2005.

The city will fund additional work, scheduled for completion next year, to reopen the perimeter road for public use and recreation. Gary Cohan, a resident whose home was in harm's way, credited the agency for his peace of mind.

"Without the excellent communication skills, detailed planning/coordination with the NRCS and expert geotechnical stabilization from the city's truly amazing team, we would not enjoy the peace of mind that we have today," he said.

Slide prevention work also was done to protect the Mulholland Tank on the east side of the Hollywood Reservoir.

Using funds made available via the federal Emergency Watershed Protection Program, NRCS collaborated with the  Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to clean up debris, construct retaining walls near the properties, grade the hillside, install a drainage system and plant vegetation.
