Hollywood Today: Directors John Landis and Joe Dante at Larry Edmunds Bookstore

Also: 'El Nogalar' opens at The Fountain Theatre, Griffith Observatory hosts a a public star party and retired basketball player Tommy Hawkins will lead a book reading Saturday.

Stop by  at 7 p.m. Saturday where directors John Landis, who directed An American Werewolf in London, and Joe Dante, who directed Gremlins, will be making an appearance to discuss and sign their latest releases. Call 323-463-3273 for more information.

Landis recently edited the book, Monsters In The Movies: 100 Years of Cinematic Nightmares.  The book includes an illustrated history of cinematic creatures with commentary. Dante will present, Trailers from Hell, a series he is producing and hosting.

  • The  will host an open house Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Planned is a Bachelor of Music Q&A session scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. During the open house, prospective students will have the opportunity to learn about the classes and programs offered at the school as well as meet members of the staff and faculty. The Musician’s Institute offers programs for guitarists, drummers, singers, bassists, recording engineers, music business professionals, keyboard players, and classes in music video and commercial production.   • El Nogalar opens today at The Fountain Theatre. Mexican playwright Tanya Saracho wrote the play which is inspired by Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. Performances are scheduled for Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. between now and March 11. Tickets are $25 on Thursdays and Fridays and $30 on Saturdays and Sundays. Opening night tickets are $34. In addition, students with identification can get tickets for $18 and seniors for $23 but only on Thursdays and Fridays.   • There will be a free public star party from 2 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. at Griffith Observatory. There will be opportunities to look at the moon, sun, and planets as well as try out various telescopes and talk to astronomers. Call 213-473-0800 for more details.
  • Tommy Hawkins, a former L.A. Lakers star, Notre Dame All-American, and media personality will make an appearance at Chevaliers Bookstore at 126 N. Larchmont Blvd. at 2 p.m. today. He will talk about his new book of poetry, Life's Reflections: Poetry for the People. For more information, call 323-465-1334.
