4 Ways to Eat Healthy on a Budget in Hollywood

Tips and suggestions for eating healthy in Hollywood

Living in Hollywood, it's easy to see lots of men and women in great shape. I've learned that exercising is only half of the fit equation. The other 50 percent fitness partner is diet. While I try to eat as healthy as I can, I often can't resist a heaping bowl of cheap mac and cheese or a (three) chocolate bar(s). Despite what you may hear, eating healthy doesn't need to be expensive. Here are some cost-effective ways of eating well:

Trader Joe's: This one may be a no-brainer for most, but I lived in Los Angeles for a few years before discovering TJ's. They have all of the lean eating essentials: quinoa, kale, spinach, fresh fruit and organic meat. Plus, your grocery bill will be half of what you'd spend at Whole Foods. 1600 Vine Street @ Selma, (323) 856-0689.

Cafe Gratitude: This restaurant on Larchmont is raw, vegan and a hotspot. The happiness of the staff is as contagious as the tastiness of the food. They have a donation-based meal called I AM GRATEFUL that's made of shredded kale with quinoa and black beans and garlic-tahini sauce. 639 Larchmont Blvd @ Melrose, (323) 580.6383.

M Cafe de Chaya: This macrobiotic celeb favorite is not cheap by any means, but they offer a great menu of juices. Their Green Day juice with kale, spinach and parsley ($7.95) is a great way to ease into juicing. I always feel energized afterwards and thankful that I didn't need to buy all of those veggies and clean a juicer...so I reward myself with a guilt-free mini Babycakes cupcake. 7119 Melrose Avenue @ Detroit, 323.525.0588.

Hollywood Farmer's Market: I've heard that farmer's markets are more expensive than the grocery store so I typically wait until closer to the end of the market (between 12 and 1) to get the best deals. I don't get my pick of produce, but the savings is worth it. Sundays from 8am-1pm at Ivar and Selma avenues.

Getting ready for hanging by the pool all summer long doesn't need to clean out your wallet. Eat well, save some money and spend it on sunscreen. Enjoy!
