Laurel Canyon Residents Upset With Mansion Builder

Residents on Grand View Drive are seeking improvements to the city's process for granting permits and enforcing development regulations for hillside communities.

L.A. Weekly reports on the effort of a neighborhood banding together to root out an unwanted builder who they say is ruining city guard rails, destroying roads and in one case, prompted a neighbor concerned about a backhoe slipping onto her backyard to move out.

More than two dozen residents appear in the dramatic YouTube video with neighbors pointing out damage caused by construction. There's even one woman who did the interview in her bathrobe.

As a result of their efforts, Councilman Paul Koretz has introduced an ordinance that would create a Condition Compliance Unit within the city's Planning Department "to enforce conditions on various Zoning Administrator cases ranging from restaurants and private schools to coastal development permits and yard adjustments."

The three positions created for this task would be funded by development application fees and fines or penalities from violators, not the city's general fund.
