DO THE ‘SATURN WAVE’ FRIDAY, JULY 19,2013 AT GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY
Citizens of Los Angeles are invited to be
photographed from space on the front lawn of Griffith Observatory on Friday,
July 19, 2013. Crowds will gather to pose and wave to NASA’s Cassini spacecraft, which is orbiting
Saturn 898 million miles away from Earth. The intra-solar system portrait will feature
Saturn, but it will also capture the sunlit portion of Earth, including Los
Angeles. Earth will be a tiny dot in the image, however, appearing in only 1.5 pixels.
After waving to the spacecraft, the public is invited to a free presentation describing
the fascinating discoveries made by Cassini.
Later in the evening, Saturn and its unique rings will be featured during free
public telescope viewing on the Observatory’s rooftop and lawn. More
information about JPL’s Saturn Wave campaign can be found at http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/news/waveatsaturn/
