Where to Commemorate Sept. 11 in Hollywood and Nearby

Several memorial events including a flag ceremony, a candle lighting service and tree planting will take place in and around Hollywood.

In memorializing the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, there will be several observances in and around Hollywood held to pay tribute to the thousands of people who lost their lives. Commemorations will take place throughout the day on Sunday, so there will be a number to choose from in your neighborhood. Here are some the events planned.


  • Where/When: The Los Angeles Fire Department Historical Society will hold an observance starting at 7 a.m. on Sept. 11 at 1355 North Cahuenga Blvd.  
    Why Go: There will be a flag raising ceremony and bells will be rung at the time each tower collapsed. Visitors can also tour the Los Angeles Fire Department Historical Society’s Museum after the ceremony.
    Cost: Free to browse.
  • CANDLE LIGHTING AND REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY
    Where/When: Councilmember Tom LaBonge, who represents a portion of Hollywood, along with the Hollywood Beautification Team and other city officials, will hold a candle lighting and ceremony on Sunday starting at 5 p.m. at the 9/11 Memorial on the south side of North Hollywood Park, 11455 Magnolia Blvd. in North Hollywood.
    Why Go: The ceremony will feature remarks from Charles Burlingame, the brother of one of the pilots of American Airlines Flight #77 that crashed into the Pentagon, as well as comments from local search and rescue firefighters who worked at Ground Zero. Red, white, and blue ribbons will be placed on trees planted in remembrance of the victims.
    Cost: Free.
  • THE 9/11 TEN-MINUTE PLAYS 
    Where/When: Woman’s Club of Hollywood starting at 7 p.m. at 1749 North La Brea Ave.
    Why Go: The American Science Theatre will present the top 10 finalists in a 9/11, 10-minute playwriting contest.
    Pricing: Starting at $6 for students or $10 for the general public.
  • MUSEUM TEACHERS WILL HOLD REMEMBRANCE
    Where/When: The Autry National Center in Griffith Park will hold a special observance starting at 1 p.m. at 4700 Heritage Way.
    Why Go: Museum teachers will offer a special story time featuring books about courage in honor of 9/11.
    Pricing: Free for Autry members but regular museum rates apply for the general public.
  • 9/11 COMMEMORATION IN THE PARK
    Where/When: The Grove will hold a special commemoration starting at 1 p.m. in the Park at The Grove at 189 The Grove Dr.
    Why Go: There will be special remembrances of the 9/11 victims and an honorary tree planting.
    Pricing: Free.
  • EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS EVENTS

Where/When: There will be an Emergency Preparedness Event from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. at Westfield Century City Mall at 10250 Santa Monica Blvd. and another event starting at 10:30 a.m. at Sherman Oaks Galleria at 15301-15303 Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks. 

Why Go: Councilman Paul Koretz, who represents Laurel Canyon, is sponsoring the first annual events designed to help all residents learn what to do in case of an earthquake or any other natural disaster. The American Red Cross and members of the Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles Police Department, and other local agencies will also be on hand.
