Wednesday Marks Summer Solstice

It's official: summer is here!

Wednesday marks summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. 

The solstice, which falls on June 20 or 21 each year, occurs when the Earth's North Pole is tilted the most toward the sun, and the sun is at its highest point.

Among those celebrating is Councilman Tom LaBonge who will lead his annual summer solstice sunset hike up to Mount Hollywood this evening, marking the 14th year of the tradition.

The public is invited to join the event which will include a salute to the Los Angeles Consul Corps and the Sister Cities of Los Angeles. 

Meet at 6 p.m. in the north end of the Griffith Observatory parking lot near the Charlie Turner Trailhead for a gentle 1.5 mile walk up to Mount Hollywood. Shuttles will be available for those who need special transportation.

Be sure to wear appropriate walking shoes.
