Water Main Rupture Floods a Hollywood Apartment Building

Most of the damage from the water main rupture is contained to the building's underground parking garage.

A utility crew worked this morning to repair a water main whose rupture in Hollywood flooded a three-story apartment building's underground parking garage and caused minor damage to two apartments.

Firefighters were sent at 7:37 p.m. Wednesday to the apartment building at 2212 N. Cahuenga Blvd., between Franklin Avenue and the Hollywood (101) Freeway, said Katherine Main of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Firefighters also had to bail out water from the garage of a nearby home, but the water did not extend into the residential area, Main said.

A Department of Water and Power crew was called to the scene just before 8 p.m. to fix the broken 12-inch main, said Carol Tucker, a spokeswoman for the utility.

Water service was interrupted to 20 to 30 residential buildings, Tucker said.

An estimate on when the main would be repaired and service restored was not immediately available, and the cause of the break was unclear, Tucker said.

Water from the break flooded the street, causing the pavement to buckle in some places. The fire department was able to stop the flow and began pumping the water out of the underground parking garage, Main said.

One lane on the north side of Cahuenga Boulevard remained closed this morning, according to a report from the scene.
