Service is Restored After Water Main Rupture

Service was interrupted today after a ruptured water main flooded a Hollywood apartment building.

Service was fully restored this afternoon following repair of a water main whose rupture in Hollywood flooded a three-story apartment building's underground parking garage and caused minor damage to two apartments.

Firefighters were sent at 7:37 p.m. Wednesday to the apartment building at 2212 N. Cahuenga Blvd., between Franklin Avenue and the Hollywood (101) Freeway, said Katherine Main of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Firefighters also had to bail water from the garage of a nearby home, but the water did not extend into the residential area, Main said.

A Department of Water and Power crew was called to the scene just before 8 p.m. to fix the broken 12-inch main, utility spokeswoman Carol Tucker said.

Water service, which was interrupted at 20 to 30 residential buildings, was restored at 1:30 this afternoon -- the same time the pipe was repaired, Tucker said. The cause of the break remained unclear.

Water from the break flooded the street, causing the pavement to buckle in some places. The fire department was able to stop the flow and began pumping the water out of the underground parking garage, Main said.

"The pipe is repaired, but the street is not,'' Main said.

One lane on the north side of Cahuenga Boulevard remained closed during repairs.
