Hollywood Heroes Awards and Summer Jazz Series

Also, Metro drops the price of its day pass to encourage more people to hop aboard.

Hollywood Heroes: The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation will honor leaders in the community at the Heroes of Hollywood Awards luncheon on Friday at the Taglyan Cultural Complex at 1201 Vine St. The event, formerly the Hollywood's Women of Distinction Awards, will now honor men and women, as well as businesses and organizations. Carol Channing, who starred in the Broadway productions of Hello Dolly! and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, is among the recipients at Friday's event. 

Summer Jazz Series: Next week marks the start of Hollywood and Highland's 8th annual weekly wine and jazz nights. Jose Rizo's Mongorama will kick off the series on June 7. The concert is free and starts at 7 p.m. in the central courtyard of the Hollywood and Highland center. See the full summer lineup here

Metro News: Planning on using the Metro this summer to get around Los Angeles? The Metro board voted last week to drop the cost of the Metro day pass from $6 to $5 and to make the pass available on TAP cards that are sold on buses. The pass will be available beginning Aug. 1 as a one-year trial to encourage commuters to use the Metro system.

If you currently use the Metro system and have a smartphone enabled with GPS, you can use Nextrip, a service that tells you approximately when the next bus or train is arriving. The service is also available by phone or text. Watch a how-to video here

Gas Prices: The cheapest gas in the area is at the Shell at 5657 Sunset Blvd. and North Wilton Place for $4.03 a gallon. The Mobil station at 5857 W. Sunset Blvd. and Bronson Avenue is also selling gas at $4.03 a gallon. These prices are according to LosAngelesGasPrices.com
