Photographer at Hollywood Shootout Recounts Experience

Gregory Bojorquez shares what it was like to photograph the Dec. 9, 2011 shootout at the intersection of Sunset and Vine.

Remember the dramatic photo of L.A. police taking down the on Sunset and Vine last December?

The man behind the camera, Gregory Bojorquez, recently talked about what it was like to witness the event unfold with the L.A. Times.

In the article, he told the Times he was walking down Sunset Boulevard with his camera bag slung across his shoulder when he encountered Tyler Brehm who had opened fire at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street.

Bojorquez, a professional photographer whose day job involves shooting movie stars and music celebrities, decided to pull his camera out.

"Yes, I'm conflicted," Bojorquez told the Times about his decision to photograph the scene. "I'm proud of what I did, documenting something that probably won't ever be seen again on Sunset and Vine. At the same time, it's awful: an innocent man losing his life like that. I'm not used to seeing stuff like this."

Bojorquez sold the photos to the Times and the Associated Press. And now the images are currently on display at the Hardhitta Gallery, 5900 Wilshire Blvd., through July 21.
