"I grew up on these hot dogs," she said. "I miss the New York-style onions. I'm sick of the raw ones."

Hom, of Los Angeles, said she got a taste of the hot dogs in New York about a year and a half ago and has become a fan.

"Pinks is overrated," Hom said. "The quality has gone down."

Hom pulled a jar of pickled relish out of her bag anticipating that the condiment would not be available. Frias told her next time, it wouldn't be necessary. Papaya King carries relish at the Hollywood location.

"Every where in New York didn't have relish," she said with a smile determined to have the hot dog her way.

Papaya King is at 1645 N. Wilcox Ave, just south of Hollywood Boulevard. Open daily 11 a.m. to  3 a.m.
