Lucy's El Adobe. Hand's down the best, in every way.

Loteria has the best chips and guacamole and their potato tacos (I'm sure there is a better name for them) are amazing.

Being born and raised in Mexico and after dining at countless"Mexican" restaurants, (which they tend to serve a tex-mex or americanized version of mexican cuisine) , our family, including my mom who still cooks original homemade mexican food, came to the conclusion that Tarascos Restaurant (3319 W Sunset Blvd) has the best MEXICAN menu and flavor that is closest to homemade mexican food.
El Compadre is an embarrasement. We returned all of our dishes we ordered. El Coyote is trendy, but once again, "americanized" versions of it. Lucy's El Adobe once again, does not have the authentic mexican flavor. Havent visited Gardens of Taxco, but Taxco is a town in Guerrero (Western state in Mexico) so I wonder if theyre menu sticks to the local area of Mexico. A rule of thumb should be this: If the Mexican restaurant youre dining at does NOt offer fresh Mexican fruit drinks ( tamarind, watermelon, horchata), most likely they are not original mexican food. Now, if you re in the downtown area "Guelaguetza" restaurant (3014 W Olympic Blvd) is the place to go. Buen Provecho!

Being a huge fan of Mexican food and gourmet dinning virtually all my life, I am amazed that Antonio's on Melrose has not been mentioned as of yet. Starting in 1970, Antonio Gutierrez and his family have been serving Mexico City cuisine. I have been a steady customer since 1976 and find their food to be far superior to all the previously mentioned establishments in terms of creativity, quality and authenticity.
Stuffed Zucchini, Spare Ribs in Salsa Verde, Carnitas in Orange Sauce, Spinach Tamales, Chiles en Nogada, Vegetarian Blue Corn Tamales are among my favorite dishes that i have not seen duplicated at any Mexican restaurant from San Diego to Santa Barbara. Antonio imports his own 100% Agave tequilas as well as having a huge selection of commercially available tequilas. He has an extensive wine cellar that would rival the finest French restaurant. It is family run and their hospitality is seconded to none. I have had the privilege of eating in some of the world best restaurants in LA, San Francisco, New York, Denver London, Rome, Tokyo and then some. If you can’t tell by now, Antonio’s on Melrose is not only my favorite Mexican restaurant, it is among my top ten restaurants of my entire restaurant dining experience. If you haven't tried Antonio's you must !

El Gran Burrito is best bang for your buck. Gardens of Taxco was the worst Mexican food I've ever eaten.
