Free Monday at MOCA and Michelle Obama in L.A.

Good morning, Hollywood. Here is a roundup of news, tips and neighborhood happenings.

Weather: Monday will be cloudy, with a high of 72 and a low of about 59, reports the National Weather Service. 

Michelle Obama in L.A.: First Lady Michelle Obama will be in Los Angeles today to be a part of a panel discussion about the challenges military families face, reports City News Service. The panel in Beverly Hills will feature Katherine Fugate, creator of the television series Army Wives. Obama will then hold two $1,000-per-person fundraisers, one in Pasadena and the other in Bel Air, for President Barack Obama's 2012 reeclection campaign.

Silent Film Series: The "Summer of Silents: Photoplay Award Winners of the Silent Era" series begins today at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Humoresque, a 1920 film about a young violinist, will screen at 7 p.m. Live music by Michael Mortilla will be performed by Mortilla on piano and Nicole Garcia on violin. Silent film fans can purchase a ticket for the entire series, which runs until August 8 and includes nine films, for $25 or $20 for Academy members and students. 8949 Wilshire Blvd. 

Banksy Offers Free Admission: If you haven't checked out MOCA's Art in the Streets exhibit yet, your patience paid off: Street artist Banksy is offering guests free admission to the exhibit every Monday, starting today, until it closes on August 8. The museum's hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"I don’t think you should have to pay to look at graffiti. You should only pay if you want to get rid of it," Banksy said in a statement. 

Hollywood Renewal: The New York Times travel section featured new Hollywood establishments, including the W Hotel, Hemingway’s Lounge and Hennessey + Ingalls bookstore.

Meetings: 

  • CHNC: The Central Hollywood Neighborhood Council's Planning and Land Use Management Committee (PLUM) will meet at 6 p.m. at the Community Room in the Hollywood Neighborhood City Hall at 6501 Fountain Ave. A light dinner will be served before the meeting. Parking is available in the lot behind the building and on the street. 
  • Outpost Homeowners Association: There is an Outpost Homeowners Association board meeting tonight at 7 p.m. in the community room of Highland Camrose Park. On the agenda: Million Trees L.A. program, City Council redistricting, crime and the upcoming summer picnic.
