Before you pull out the grill at your next cookout this summer, the Los Angeles Fire Department is warning everyone to put safety first this season.
"Los Angeles Firefighters know that when summertime hits, people start the seasonal migration to decks, balconies and backyards to fire up the grills,” said Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department. “It's important to remember to clean grills off and remove grease and fat buildup which easily ignite.”
There are some other common sense safety tips that firefighters suggest keeping in mind this summer. They include: never leave a barbecue grill unattended, place the grill away from siding, deck railings and overhanging branches, use long-handled grilling tools and only use the grill outdoors.

Scott said children and pets should be kept away from grills as well.
"Have a 3-foot safety zone around grills and campfires and keep kids and pets clear of the area," Scott said. "Dispose of coals after they cool in a metal can and, most importantly, never leave grills unattended."
