Excessive Heat Warning Issued in Los Angeles

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning due to hot and potentially humid weather in Southern California today.

If you're planning to head outdoors this afternoon be prepared for possibly triple digit temperatures.

The heat index is expected to top 105 degrees in parts of Los Angeles this weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued an exessive heat warning from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. The hot weather poses a risk, especially to the homeless, elderly and people working outdoors.

City officials encourage residents to use libraries, parks and six official cooling centers.

The Recreation and Parks Department opened cooling centers at six senior citizen facilities across the San Fernando Valley in North Hollywood, Panorama City, Sunland, Sylmar, Sherman Oaks and Northridge. They will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Residents who require power to run medical equipment were encouraged to call the Department of Water and Power's customer service line to ask about the Lifeline Services Program.

Mayor Antonio Villaragosa advises residents to drink plenty of water and limit alcohol consumption, stay indoors as much as possible, raise the thermostat to 78 degrees to reduce energy usage, avoid cooking during the hottest part of the day and to open windows at night to allow cooler air to circulate.

If possible, check on seniors, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning. Remember to never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
