Counselor Fatally Stabbed, Police Take Student Into Custody

Authorities are seeking a motive as to why a popular Job Corps counselor in Hollywood was killed.

An investigation was under way Thursday to determine why a 22-year-old student allegedly stabbed to death a popular 48-year-old program adviser at a Job Corps facility in Hollywood.

The suspect, who lives at the vocational school, was taken into custody shortly after the 4:45 p.m. stabbing Wednesday at The Studio Club honor dorm at 1200 N. Lodi Place, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He was detained by other students and held until police arrived.

The motive for the slaying of Dwayne Alexander was not immediately clear, and the name of the suspect was not immediately released.

Student Jonathan Whitney said the suspect had been causing a lot of trouble in recent days, while Alexander had been a helpful mentor.

"A lot of my friends are devastated because he was a great guy," Whitney told KCAL9.

Alex Osuna, a former Job Corps student, said Alexander showed him the ropes at the facility and helped him secure housing.

"I never had a problem," he told ABC7.

Crisis counselors were brought in to assist students after the slaying.

The facility is run by the Job Corps and provides training in such areas as computers and mechanics.

The courses last about a year and about 100 students live and study at the facility, which it shares with the YWCA.
