Carpenters Protest Outside Hollywood Heights Hotel

Workers from Carpenters Local 1506 say general contractor Lusardi is paying below standard wages.

Wondering what the demonstration was about in front of the this morning?

There were about 50 protestors from Carpenters Local 1506 holding up signs and chanting throughout the morning, pausing to let pedestrians pass by on the sidewalk. Some drivers passing by on Highland Avenue honked in support while some drove by giving the thumbs down.

Protestors contend Lusardi, a general contractor, is paying below standard wages to subcontractors working on a project at the hotel.

"We feel [Lusardi] pays substandard wages, no health or welfare benefits for their employees or their families, there's no pension," said Steve Pasko, who helped organize the protest. "We want the [hotel] to use responsible contractors on the jobs. Now they basically have to decide what to do."

Pasko said the below standard wages puts union workers out of the running for winning project bids and they would like a level playing field.
