Victim Identified in Hollywood Hills Body Parts Case

Coroner withholds man's identity at request of investigators.

Authorities now know the name of the man whose head, hands and feet were found this week in Bronson Canyon Park near the Hollywood sign, but will not release it immediately, officials said Friday.

The man's identity and other information about him were being withheld at the request of law enforcement, said Los Angeles County Coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

The severed head was found at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 3200 block of Canyon Drive, when two people walking nine dogs saw two of the animals playing with an object in a bag. Investigators do not believe it had been there long, and they discounted an earlier theory that the case could be connected to the discovery of a human torso in Arizona.

Investigators searching the area Wednesday found two hands and two feet, said Los Angeles police Officer Bruce Borihanh.

Investigators said earlier the man was believed to have been in his 40s to 60s, said LAPD Officer Gregory Baek.

The search continued Thursday, but no other human remains were found. The search was called off late Thursday, and the area was being reopened to the public Friday, Baek said.

Investigators detained a person for questioning on Thursday after going to an apartment building near the park where the remains were found, radio station KFI-AM reported. Baek said no one has been placed under arrest.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call 877-LAPD-24-7.
