1 Person Fatally Stabbed on Subway in Hollywood

Authorities are on scene at Metro's Hollywood/Vine Rail Station investigating the Friday night death.

A male on a skateboard stabbed someone to death on a Metro Rail subway train in Hollywood on Friday night, authorities said.

The stabbing was reported at 7:35 p.m. at the Metro Red Line Station at Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, said Officer Cleon Joseph of the Los Angeles Police Department.

A Metro official said it was the first homicide on the Red Line since it opened in 1993.

Victim information was not immediately available.

Metro's deputy executive officer, Marc Littman, told City News Service there have been "only been a handful of homicides'' on the five-line Metro Rail system that has carried more than a billion passengers since it opened in 1990.

An L.A. Times staffer said he witnessed the stabbing according to a report published on the Times' breaking news blog, L.A. Now.

As of 10:15 p.m. Los Angeles sheriff's deputies were still on scene investigating. The Sheriff's Department provides police services for Metro's train stations.

While the on scene investigation continues, Metro's Twitter page is advising patrons to use the station at Hollywood/Highland instead and transfer to Line 217 or follow station announcements for a bus shuttle.
