Lucky Devils: Microbrew and BBQ

Secret sauces, handcrafted beers, and baby back ribs make Lucky Devils a happy hour in Hollywood staple

If you like a tasty microbrew to wash down a good ol' fashioned barbecue or a burger, then Lucky Devils is the place for you.

Located at 6613 Hollywood Blvd., Lucky Devils is a lively hotspot that offers artisan burgers, house-smoked barbeque ribs, a variety of handcrafted beers and a great happy hour deal.

Lucky Devils prides itself on making everything in-house and from scratch. According to the owner, who just so happens to be named Lucky, the bar uses only the finest ingredients in their dishes. The health-conscious will relish in the fact that dishes are constructed from organic and locally grown vegetables, hormone-free meats and trans fat-free oils.

It is not unusual for Lucky Devils to bring in new beers. In 2011, management was pleased to announce collaboration with Brewery Ommegang from Cooperstown, NY, which produces Belgian-style beers. Several of the Ommegang beers that the bar has on tap are Triple Perfection, Chocolate Indulgence, Belgian Pale Ale Hennepin, White The Abbeye Ale Three, and Philosophers.

In addition to the Ommegang selections, the bar serves an international selection of beer such as Craftsman Monkey See Monkey Do Double IPA, Anderson Valley Oatmeal Stout and Lucifer Pale Ale.

In addition to beer, Lucky Devil serves a variety of red, whites and sparkling wine (average price $7.50 per glass). A full menu of mixed drinks is available as well. For the non-alcohol drinkers, delicious organic free trade ice teas ($2.25 with free refills) as well as lemonade ($3) and bottled water ($1.50 - $3) is available. Also on the drink menu are bottled Sprecher Root Beer ($3.50 -voted No. 1 by The New York Times) and bottled Bundaberg Ginger Beer ($3).

The bar’s exterior welcomes you with a big red devil, grinning from the awning above. The inside has long wooden bar and stool-style seating, decorative beer taps and tables and chairs placed throughout the room.

Various pictures of “Lucky Devil” pop up in the corners of the room and television screens are mounted above several of the booths. The back bar features a wide variety of microbrews on tap and a glass fridge full of exotic bottled beers.

Above the bar is a sign that reads, “Everybody has to believe in something…I believe I’ll have another drink.”– W.C. Fields.

There is a red-lit hue to the atmosphere inside and the walls are a mix of red and white paint and exposed wooden blocks.

Outside, a patio with red chairs and tables provide an excellent place to grab a burger and some fresh California air. The people watching from the patio never gets old and scoring a seat during happy hour is a must.

Lucky Devils attracts a hefty dose of regulars who can’t get enough of the kitchen’s special blends of barabecue seasonings and those who love a good beer. Tourists pop in for burgers and fries and happy hour regulars snag bar stool seats.

Weekends bring in bar hoppers and people often begin their night of traveling from one nightspot to another by filling up on one of Lucky Devils’ many menu delicacies.

People like Lucky Devils for many reasons. Here are a few of the ones that came up when I asked patrons what drew them in for happy hour:

  • “They really do have the best burgers here. They’re great!” – Jason Greene
  • “I like the big selection of beers. It’s a fun atmosphere and isn’t too poshy like a lot of surrounding Hollywood bars.” – Noreen Thompson
  • “I always order food and drinks after work. I get out of the office and pretty much have to drive by Lucky Devils everyday. It’s really hard not to pop in for one, or two, or let’s be honest – three!” – Alicia Frost
  • “I like to sit outside when it’s warm. I like to watch all the crazy people from the patio– at any time of the day. Tourists stumble in from time-to-time and they are funny to watch. They take pictures of everything in sight.” – Kimmi McCann
  • “They have a lot of really really good beers. I’m a big fan of the selection of Ommegang that they just started carrying. I haven’t been able to find that stuff in many bars.” – Todd Wilson
  • “The secret sauce is pretty solid. I would love to know what they put in there.” – Courtenay Armstrong
