Steve Trash Takes Green Act to Magic Castle

The eco-entertainer brings his tricks using trash to Hollywood this weekend.

Steve Trash isn’t your typical rabbit out of a hat magician, but he does wear a pretty tall hat and has a few green tricks up his sleeve.

“I do a lot of tricks with trash, found objects," he said. "The idea is very supportive of magic. An object that you consider not valuable becomes valuable by changing your perspective. I can do magic with something someone has thrown away.”

Trash will be bringing his "eco-entertainment" to the Magic Castle in Hollywood this weekend.

Each of his tricks is inspired by his personal view that everything in the natural world is connected and people need to be aware of the choices they make, especially when it comes to the environment. Audiences at the Magic Castle can also expect to see plenty of quick-hand magic tricks such as pieces of newspaper changing into money or big illusions such as balancing a woman on a wooden crutch 4 feet off the stage.

Growing up in Alabama, Trash developed a passion for nature and theater.

“I didn’t want to just be a guy that works for an environmental company that cleans up toxic waste,” Trash said. “I didn’t want to be just an actor or just a magician either. So what I tried to do was transcend both of those areas.”

Trash graduated with a degree in theater from the University of North Alabama in 1984, and a few days later he was performing on the streets of New York City. When other magicians used fancy tuxedos, wands and glamour girls to disappear and reappear, Trash used, well, trash.

The sidewalk shows soon turned into major performances. Trash has since been sharing his mixture of environmentalism and magic around the globe.

“Since I was a young person, that is one idea I wanted to share with lots of people through entertainment.”

Trash will perform his Solo Green Magic Show at the Magic Castle on Friday and Saturday in the Hat & The Hare Lounge from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Normally a members only club, the Magic Castle offers trial memberships. Go to www.magiccastle.com for details.
