Hook and Hoop Race

Every first Sunday of the month, the Autry celebrates American Indian culture with stories from American Indian authors and illustrators, special docent-led family tours, live American Indian music, and a special American Indian cultural presentation from John Bradley (Comanche/Cherokee), a nationally recognized artist in basketry and traditional arts.

Hook and Hoop Race is an ancient game mostly played by tribes from the Southern Plains to the Northwest Coast of the United States. For two or more players, this game is a form of a foot race. Contestants use a hooked stick to throw a small wooden hoop as they run through a pre-marked course.  The first player to reach the finish line, without touching the hoop with their hands or feet, wins.  Players need to be able to run short distances.
