“I grew up in the South, so segregation was a really big issue. There was such a struggle back then and we’ve come so far, although there is still a lot to do. It’s a national holiday, but I find that a lot of people don’t realize just how much segregation affected so many people. It’s a great day for service, not just taking a day off, but also helping out … doing things that he would want you to be doing and be proud of.”
