Weekend Planner: A Tiki Celebration, Western Jams and Shakespeare Festival

Here are a few options of things to do in Hollywood this weekend.

Staying in town on this Carmageddon weekend? Enjoy a music festival at the L.A Zoo or the Outfest film festival at the Ford Amphitheatre. Head outdoors for Shakespeare in the park. Make the best of your summer with a real Tiki celebration at the Egyptian Theatre. Go back in time to the American West with stories and songs performed by musicians and cowboys. You don't have to go far to take advantage of some of the best entertainment venues L.A. has to offer.

1. Music Festival at the L.A. Zoo

Why go: Come to the L.A Zoo for a music festival featuring the sounds of steel drums, violins, guitars and other instruments playing throughout the night for everyone to enjoy. Los Angeles-based indie bands will play at the festival.

2. Shakespeare Festival 2011: Hamlet and The Merry Wives of Windsor

Where/When: Griffith Park, 4730 Crystal Springs Dr., Los Angeles, 90027. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 15-17, at 7 p.m.

Why go: The opportunity to see free showings of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and The Merry Wives of Windsor is exactly what turns an ordinary weekend into a memorable one for any theater enthusiast. Come see Hamlet on Friday and Saturday and The Merry Wives of Windsor on Sunday.

3. Outfest 2011: Under the Stars at the Ford

Where/When Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. E, Los Angeles, 90068. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 15-17, at 8:30 p.m.

Why go: L.A.’s longest running film festival, Outfest 2011, offers a diverse array of gay and lesbian themed movies. The Ford Amphitheatre will show three films this weekend.

4. Egyptian Theatre’s Annual Tiki Celebration and Screening of Bird of Paradise

Where/ When: Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, 90028. Saturday, July 16, at 5 p.m.

Why go: What better way to experience summer than with a fun tiki celebration followed by a screening of the 1951 movie Bird of Paradise, directed by Delmer Daves. Musicians Ukulele Davey, King Kukulele and his Friki Tikis will perform in the Egyptian Theatre Courtyard, along with the Polynesian Paradise Dancers. The celebration includes a tiki fashion show and tiki art by Eric October. Enjoy a real tiki feast from various food vendors, barbecue and Polynesian-style cocktails in the courtyard.

5. Sunday Jam with the Western Music Association

Where/When: The Autry in Griffith Park, 4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles, 90027. Sunday, July 17, at 11 a.m.

Why go: In the mood for some stories and songs from the days of the Old West? Then, this is the place to be on Sunday with musicians and cowboy poets performing stories and open range songs of the American West.
