Los Angeles City College Plans to Focus on Safety This Summer

The college will have thousands of students on campus for its summer session.

Los Angeles City College is considering safety in the midst of preparing for its summer session.

In light of last week’s deadly shootings at Santa Monica College, L.A. City College President Renee Martinez said it is natural to want to take precautions.

“We are concerned about it,” Martinez said. “It could happen, right?”

The campus, which is located at 855 N. Vermont Ave., has moved up an already planned CERT, or Community Emergency Response Team, training program to later this month. Emergency alerts on campus will also now include email, voice mail and text messages, according to Martinez.

“We’re really beefing up our systems,” Martinez said.

The campus plans to have the most students it has had on campus in years, thanks to a full summer session which hasn’t been offered recently, according to Martinez.

“We haven’t had a robust summer program since 2009 where we offered 225 sections,” Martinez said.

More than 5,900 students have registered for summer classes so far, according to Phillip Briggs, a research analyst at LACC.

The summer curriculum will focus on “general education classes,” including social sciences, math and foreign languages.

"We’re concerned about them completing their general education requirements," Martinez said of the students.

The classes are fundamental for students to not only graduate from LACC but to also be able to transfer to a college or university after graduation, according to Martinez. LACC offers associate degrees.

There will be an orientation and academic assessments offered to high school graduates this summer as well.

“We’re trying to make it as easy as possible for our high school students to get in,” Martinez said.

Summer classes are scheduled to begin on Monday.
