"Hollywood Tonight," Alan Ball's Macaws and Weekend Street Closures

The latest issue in Patch's weekly roundup of Hollywood neighborhood news.

Moon Walk of Fame: The video for Michael Jackson's "Hollywood Tonight," was released this week with scenes featuring the Walk of Fame, Pantages Theatre and Hollywood Boulevard itself. Director Wayne Isham previously used the interior of the Pantages for Jackson's “You Are Not Alone” video in 1995. (see video embedded in the slideshow, left.)

Moving On Up: One day after Tuesday's election, City Council voted to approve a controversial mixed-use commercial building at 1601 North Vine Street. Councilman Tom LaBonge, fresh off the heels of a victory securing his third term, was among the unanimous "yea" votes for the Vine Street Tower Project (Richard Alarcon, Bernard Parks and Dennis Zine were all absent for the vote).

CurbedLA rounds up details, including a requirement that at least half of the building is to be reserved by businesses in the entertainment industry.

Celebrity Safari: The L.A. Times reports that tour bus companies continue to receive complaints from Hollywood residents, even after taking measures to alleviate their impact on noise and traffic. Some celebrity home tours had replaced loudspeakers with headsets and limited routes during daylight hours, but residents say these efforts haven't solved the problem.

This may be the side effect of some good news:  From 2009 to 2010 there was a 8 percent increase in overnight visitors to the city, and tourism spending went up 10.4 percent to $13.1 billion from the year before (though, they note this falls short of the $14.2 billion from 2007).

Inglourious Neighbers: If the "obnoxious pteradactyl-like screams" of your neighbor's birds is driving you nuts, you may not be alone. Hollywood resident Quentin Tarantino has filed a lawsuit against Academy Award-winning director Alan Ball, whose macaws are keeping QT from writing.  [TMZ]

Star Watch: The Hollywood Walk of Fame's Ana Martinez writes on Twitter (@wofstargirl) that stars are never removed for personal reasons, so, in response to queries about Charlie Sheen's star for his work in television she tweeted, "No we are not taking it out!"

Martinez also hinted that Bryan Adam's star unveiling will be coming soon, and that they're currently scouting a perfect location for Oprah Winfrey's star.

School Assault: Jorge Chavez, 33, a coach at Bernstein High (near Wilton and Fountain), was arrested and charged after allegedly assaulting with assaulting a student in a locker room. He'd only been at the school for six days prior to the incident. [LAist]

Traffic Blips: To prepare Hollywood Blvd. for resurfacing, there will be partial street closures between Yucca and Sunset on Saturday and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. City Councilman Eric Garcetti's office advises drivers "to use Cahuenga Boulevard and Franklin Avenue as alternate routes."

Shortly after a midnight Tuesday, a tree that fell onto the northbound 101 freeway caused a car to crash in the Cahuenga Pass. No one was injured. [Daily News]

A man crashed his Porsche Carrera into a lightpole at Franklin and Highland early Wednesday morning.  The driver was the only reported injury, though his condition is unknown. [Daily News]
