Head to Kids 5K at LA Live or 'Hop' at the Arclight

Hollywood Patch's best weekend bets for the family.

There's plenty to do this weekend while taking advantage of the nice weather. There's a 5K race and carnival for the whole family with proceeds going toward pediatric cancer research or enjoy some Gypsy music at an outdoor concert in downtown Los Angeles.

Free Sakai Flamenco Gypsy Music Concert

Where/ When: W. M. Keck Foundation Children’s Amphitheatre, Walt Disney Concert Hall 111 S. Grand Ave. Los Angeles, CA USA 90012; Sunday, April 17, 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Why go: Put a rose in your teeth and release your inner gypsy as the percussion, clapping, dancing and guitar music awakens your senses — plus it’s free. FYI: The word “sakai” means “eyes” in the Gypsy language, which is the theme of the soulful selections from Southern Spain. There is also a fun Bohemian-style opera performance.

Price: Free. Tickets are given out one hour before each performance at the venue.

Santa Monica Mountains Science Festival

Where/When: Paramount Ranch  2813 Cornell Road Agoura Hills, CA; Friday April 15, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.  Saturday, April 16, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why go: This is a fun way to get your kids to learn some outdoor science. Friday evening there will be star gazing, a campfire and looking for night-flying bats and owls. Saturday will be time for hikes, checking out wildflowers and avoiding poison oak. Enjoy the great outdoors while learning how to spot animals like mountain lions.

Price: Free

Kids 4 Kids 5K Run/ Walk at LA Live

 Where/When: LA Live at Club Nokia (across from Staples Center)  800 West Olympic Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90015; Sunday April 17,  8 a.m .to  1:30 p.m

Why go: This fun race will start with a Disney warm up and be an easy walk or run for the entire family. Everyone who crosses the finish line will get a goodie bag. Then head over to the carnival where celebrities (including a lot of kid stars) will be manning the booths and rides. Proceeds go to  pediatric cancer research.

Price: $10 for kids under 18-years-old, $25 for adults. Price includes a T-shirt and admission into the carnival.

Hop The Movie

Where/ When: Arclight Theater 6360 W Sunset Blvd, Hollywood, CA; Call for showtimes (323) 464-4226 or go online.

Why go: If you haven’t seen this fun movie, why not hippity hop on down to the theater and check it out this weekend?  It’s been number one at the box office for a couple of weeks now. You’ll be singing “I Want Candy” for a week, but there are worse things.

Price: $10 children ages 3-12 , $12.50 adults

Kids Culinary Day Camp at Chef’s Inc.

Where/When: 10955 Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles CA 90064; April 18- April 22 10 a.m. to 1 p.m..

Why go: If your kids are out of school and love to cook, this could be a really fun week for them as they learn to cook international cuisine with Chef Leslie McKenna. Each day will cover a different country including France, Japan, Italy, Thailand and Mexico. Once the kids learn, they can practice their repertoir on their parents.

Price: $450 for the week. Ages 6 to 16 welcome.
