First 'Next Weekend' Festival to Take Place Next Month

The event will be sponsored by Sundance Cinemas.

Sundance Cinemas is preparing to launch its first "Next Weekend" Film Festival.

Tickets go on sale next week for the festival which will take place in August. The event will kick off on Aug. 8 with the showing of a double feature, American Movie and Coven, at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery as part of Cinespia.

The film festival will look toward the future of film while also reflecting on the past, according to John Cooper, director of the Sundance Film Festival.

"NEXT WEEKEND was created to not only celebrate the current generation of filmmakers working with NEXT sensibilities, but also to reflect on those films that paved the way," Cooper said.

The festival will take place from Aug. 9 through Aug. 11 at the Sundance Cinemas. On the night of Aug. 11, the films will spread from the Sundance Cinemas to over venues across town, including the Cinefamily, The Museum of Contemporary Art and the UCLA School of  Theater, Film and Television at the Billy Wilder Theater at the Hammer Museum, among others.

Ticket prices range from $12 to $15, and the exact lineup will be announced on Tuesday, according to Emel Shaikh, Sundance Institute's media relations coordinator.
