John Marshall High School Senior to Star in Billboard

Four LAUSD Students Win “I’M IN” Healthy Eating Photo Contest

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD)’s “I’M IN” campaign (ÚNETE in Spanish) is pleased to congratulate four LAUSD students for winning the “I’M IN” Healthy Eating Billboard Photo Contest held during National Nutrition Month.  From March 1-31, 2014, LAUSD students submitted photos showcasing why THEY’RE INTO healthy eating along with captions of 50 words or less.  Each of the following students will each receive a $200 gift card and they will collectively star in “I’M IN” billboards throughout Los Angeles in August 2014 – just in time for back-to-school:

The “I’M IN” Healthy Eating Photo Contest aims to raise awareness about the District’s efforts to keep students healthy by providing healthy meals and wellness programs in schools, while also encouraging young people and their families to lead healthy lifestyles at home.

“We’re thrilled to have received hundreds of creative entries from students showing us why they’re into healthy eating,” says David Binkle, director of Food Services at LAUSD.  “More importantly, we’re excited that the ‘I’M IN” message is being celebrated and applied by the students in their daily lives not only at school, but also at home and in their extra curricular activities.”

The entry of Third Grader Bianca da Silva Carmo from Castlebay Lane Elementary in Porter Ranch showcases five students cheering for healthy eating.

Third Grader Maddox Reyes from San Miguel Avenue Magnet School in South Gate conceptualized a photo shoot with his classmates at a local supermarket showing how strong kids can be when they eat healthy compared to those who choose to eat junk food.

In her photo, Brianna Hampton, eighth grader from Barack Obama Global Preparatory Academy in Los Angeles, credits her gymnastic skills to maintaining a healthy diet.

Lastly, Senior Cross Country and Track and Field Runner Caroline Tan from John Marshall High School in Los Feliz shows in her photo entry how her athletic performance skyrockets when she maintains a diet rich in vitamins and minerals instead of eating foods with chemicals whose names she can’t pronounce.

To see the students’ winning photos, visit the “I’M IN” website at www.iminlausd.com.  LAUSD Food Services staff members evaluated the entries based on creatively and how the photo and caption best showcased how the students are into healthy eating.  Research shows that students who eat nutritious meals in school earn higher test scores and tend to make healthier food choices throughout the day.

The LAUSD Board of Education through the 2012 Good Food Procurement Resolution pledged to ensure that all students have access to nutritious and wholesome food that are locally sourced with sound environmental practices.  Serving 650,000 meals daily, 75 percent of fresh fruits and vegetables served at Café LA, the district’s dining facilities are harvested within 200 miles of the District.   Lean proteins, low fat dairy and even wheat are sourced locally.
