IMAGINATION WORKSHOP SCHEDULED TO OPEN NOVEMBER 9, 2013

The Newest Exhibit at Kidspace Children’s Museum will Open to the Public on Saturday, November 9

PASADENA, CALIF. (September 10, 2013) – The latest addition to Kidspace Children’s Museum, the Imagination Workshop, is set to open to the public on Saturday, November 9, 2013. Following The Robert & Mary Galvin Physics Forest, which opened to the public on July 12, 2012, the Imagination Workshop is the second major update to the Museum since moving to Brookside Park in 2004. Demolition of the space inside the Roberts Pavilion began in late August with construction and installation beginning this week.

Once completed, the Imagination Workshop will be a space for children of all ages to assemble, dismantle, and repurpose all manner of materials and objects. The experience inside the Imagination Workshop will be open ended, inviting participants to engage with daily or weekly building projects or to simply gather materials and tinker. Whether it’s a toy or radio, electronic or mechanical device, new object or old, this resource will present children with limitless opportunity to discover the inner workings of everyday objects, as well as the principles that make them work. The concept behind the imagination workshop was developed by a team of Kidspace staff in conjunction with the Kidspace Board of Directors.

“The idea behind the Imagination Workshop is to provide a space that gives children the freedom to explore objects and materials they see daily but may not know how they work,” said Michael Shanklin, Kidspace’s Chief Executive Officer. “Children could be dismantling a radio during one visit, assembling a circuit board during another, or creating simple machines from spoons and clothespins during the next. This exhibit will inspire children to discover how the world around them fits together.”

When the space is completed, its multifaceted exterior will reflect the creative nature of the activities taking place inside. The interior will feature workspace for multiple projects to take place simultaneously, space to hold a wide variety of tools and materials, display cases and shelves to allow children to showoff their creations, and a large video display to show past projects and creations as well as aid Educators in leading large group projects and demonstrations.

The Imagination Workshop is the latest addition to Kidspace to be funded by The Campaign for the Future of Kidspace, a capital campaign announced in May 2012, which was launched to build new exhibits, upgrade existing learning environments, improve guest amenities, and develop new curriculum and programs. The Galvin Physics Forest was the first project to be funded by the campaign. The Imagination Workshop was planned along with several other exhibit and program concepts as a part of an exhibit master plan which details the next several projects to open at Kidspace over the next several years.
